The School of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Kent State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs of study in speech-language pathology and audiology.

The mission and major goals of the school are to:

  • train individuals to diagnose, treat, and provide information regarding communication disorders
  • conduct research regarding the nature, treatment, and prevention of communication disorders
  • provide community service to help those individuals with or likely to develop communication disorders

The school began granting degrees in the 1940s and currently has more than 1,500 alumni. Our graduates hold positions in school systems, hospitals and medical practices, and in community, private, and university clinics. Some have chosen to enter private practice in speech-language pathology and audiology and businesses focusing on communication. A number of our alumni work in universities and research laboratories.

A humanistic and social foundation is basic to the curriculum. Undergraduate education is characterized by basic scientific information and theoretical considerations, with an emphasis on preparation for professional training at the graduate level. Training at the graduate level involves intensive clinical exposure and emphasizes the development of those knowledge areas and skills necessary to train clinically competent speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

The program in Speech-Language Pathology of Kent State University is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of The American Speech-Language Hearing Association. The Doctor of Audiology program at Kent State University, in association with the Northeast Ohio Audiology Consortium, is also accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Therefore, all students receiving a graduate degree from our programs and who complete the necessary practicum are eligible for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology from ASHA and qualify for Ohio licensure.

The Ph.D. program is designed so that students' curricula are tailored to meet individual needs and interests. Training at the Ph.D. level may emphasize preparation for employment in laboratory, clinical, or academic settings.

Our faculty is distinguished by its numerous clinical and scientific publications, as well as by its current clinical and research involvement. The school was recognized as the only program in Ohio to receive a Program Excellence Award, an Academic Challenge Award, and Research Challenge Awards.

We invite you to take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the fine academic and clinical education that Kent State offers. If you have any questions, please call or email us. We encourage you to visit our school and meet our faculty and students. Find out first hand why "quality is a matter of fact at Kent."
