Movement and Leisure Skills

Originally called the Motor Development Program when founded in 1976, the Movement and Leisure Skills Program (MLSP) is designed to provide comprehensive physical education activities to individuals of all ages, with the goal of enhancing motor performance of participants by individualizing movement skills assessment, instruction and evaluation. It also provides teaching experiences for undergraduate and graduate students and opportunities for research. Approximately 50 participants from surrounding communities and 30 Kent State students participate in the program which meets on Wednesday evenings between 5:30 to 7:30.
Physical Education Professional Community (PEPC)

The Physical Education Professional Community (PEPC) is a living/learning community for incoming first and second year students whose intention is to pursue a degree in the subject of Physical Education: teacher licensure (including a dual health and PE option), human movement studies, athletic training, or exercise science. Students enrolled in the Physical Education &/or Athletic Training majors are encouraged to live in PEPC, situated in Centennial Hall Plaza E & F. Here they have constant opportunity to interact with peers and faculty who share a commitment to personal and societal healthy active lifestyles. Students who commute to campus and are enrolled in Physical Education &/or Athletic Training majors, and may use PEPC as a base of contact with fellow students. The benefits of living in the PEPC include:
- Social events to promote a healthy active lifestyle and cohesion within the community. Events might include monthly activities such as rock climbing, bowling, volleyball, skiing, camping, canoeing, etc.
- Close daily interaction with PEP & ATTR students and faculty, including personal faculty advising as well as mentoring by sophomore, junior, or senior PEP & ATTR students.
- Access to in-residence technology for assignments and movement analysis PED Lab.
- Proximity to Memorial Gym Annex, Student Recreation and Wellness Center, the KSU track, fitness trail, and campus bus line.
- Collaborative field experiences in suburban, urban, and rural public schools, collegiate Division I athletics, fitness programs, and other experiences in the major fields, are an integral part of the PEP & ATTR programs.
- Curriculum-related field trips and experiences. Examples include outdoor pursuits expeditions; youth sport observation and coaching experiences; formal program field experiences; and professional sport field trips. These experiences will provide community members an environment for continuity of learning, teambuilding, and the development of positive personal and professional relationships with peers and faculty.
- In-residence seminars and visiting speakers. These seminars feature national leaders in the field of physical education pedagogy visiting PEPC for guest lectures, discussion seminars, and/or practical workshops.
Senior Exercise
Contact Dr. Ellen Glickman
This program was created in 1991 and is designed to provide assessment, prescription, exercise participation and evaluation to persons aged 60 and above. The program is held in the Gym Annex on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 to 12:00 noon and involves 10 undergraduate and graduate students who work with approximately 40 seniors from the surrounding area. Physicians consent is required along with a registration fee.
