Early Childhood Education Technology

Two year associate degree programs in Early Childhood are offered at the Salem, Ashtabula, and Tuscarawas campuses of Kent State University.  Visit the web site for each campus for information on these programs.

Bachelor of Science in Education (KENT, SALEM)

This undergraduate program prepares educators for teaching in preschool through the third grade. Upon successful completion of the program and a pass on Praxis II, students are eligible for Ohio licensure in Early Childhood. The Ohio license is defined as “valid for teaching children who are typically developing, at-risk, gifted, and who have mild/moderate educational needs.

The Early Childhood Education program of study is field intensive. Throughout the five block sequence of courses beginning in the sophomore year, students gain teaching experience in diverse settings, including urban and inclusive programs. Upon completion of the program, students will have accumulated approximately 1500 clock hours of field experience in preschool, kindergarten and primary classrooms.

Master of Education & Master of Arts in Early Childhood

The M.Ed. and M.A. programs are designed for teachers and other professionals in fields related to education who wish to pursue advanced study in teaching, leadership, research, or public policy and advocacy.

Ohio endorsements for Preschool and Early Education of the Handicapped (EEH) are available to qualified applicants as part of the Master of Education program. It is also possible to add the Early Childhood license to an existing certificate in elementary or special education.

Students are guided by faculty in the development of a self-assessment and program of study that satisfies individual professional goals and expectations of the program. All students must complete an exit project that may include a thesis (M.A.), practicum (M.Ed.), or action research project (M.Ed.).

Master of Arts in Teaching

This degree is for those students with non-licensure bachelor degrees who wish to obtain Ohio licensure for Early Childhood (age three to grade three). Consult the M.A.T. program description for further details. Admission requirements include the Graduate Record Exam, Praxis I math, a 2.75 undergraduate G.P.A., and an interview.
