UCTE CHARGE

The UCTE reports to the office of the Provost and serves as an advisory body to the Educational Policies Council (EPC) and other interested groups on matters related to teacher education curriculum.

The UCTE’s charge is two-fold:

  1. To consider curricular proposals relating to teacher education and licensure, including academic content area proposals that might impact teacher education.
  2. To liaise with outside agencies concerning strategies to support the quality of teacher education at KSU.

CURRICULUM PROPOSALS:

Procedure

Regarding the teacher education curriculum, UCTE will review curriculum proposals concurrently with college curriculum committee approval, using the following procedure:

  • Proposals are submitted by the college Associate Dean to the UCTE (co)chair. Co-chairs will screen proposals to determine if they need full UCTE discussion, and if necessary send to UCTE members via email or post to UCTE web page.
  • Areas for discussion relative to each proposal will include
    • Rationale for the proposal
    • Impact of the proposal on other colleges and programs
    • Issues of duplication and encroachment
    • Impact of the proposal on time to graduation

Proposal Content

Regarding the content of proposals, two kinds of proposal would be important for UCTE to review:

  • College (non EHHS) content proposals that would have an impact on teacher education programs.
  • Teacher education program proposals that would impact programs or offerings in other (non EHHS) colleges.

The following questions might be considered in identifying proposals that might need UCTE review:

  • Do the content courses being revised/eliminated/replaced appear on teacher education program sheets?
  • Will proposed changes to teacher education programs impact other college offerings?
  • Has the proposal sufficiently addressed "impact" in light of above two questions?
  • Is course content appropriate for teacher education students?

LIAISON WITH OUTSIDE AGENCIES:

The UCTE will liaise with outside agencies as needed to support the quality of teacher education programs at Kent State. Such agencies include public school districts, the Ohio Department of Education, the Kent Partnership, Educational Resource Centers, and other colleges and universities. Topics and issues requiring such liaison might include educational legislation, educational initiatives, accreditation and assessment issues, grants, and interdisciplinary teaching and learning.

CALL:

The UCTE  will meet each semester as required (but at least once per semester), to advise EPC in a timely manner on curricular proposals and teacher education initiatives.

 CHAIRPERSONS:

The UCTE will be led by two faculty co-chairs, one selected from the College of Education, Health and Human Services and one selected from the College of Arts and Sciences, elected for staggered two-year terms by the membership.

TERM:

Program coordinators will serve terms concurrent with their appointments as coordinators.  Appointed members will serve three-year terms.

MEANS OF APPOINTMENT:

  1. Program coordinators will serve on the UCTE for the duration of their service as coordinators.
  2. Arts and Sciences representatives will be identified by the Associate Dean of that college.
  3. Faculty Senate At-Large members will be appointed by the Faculty Senate Committee on Committees.

 ALTERNATES:

Alternates shall be appointed as needed when faculty members are on leave or resign.

SUBCOMMTTEES:

The UCTE will have the power to appoint other ad hoc committees to include UCTE members, members drawn from the university community at-large, and individuals from outside agencies.
