Uploading Your Page to the Web with Windows

Drag and Drop

System Requirements: Windows 98/NT and Internet Explorer 5.0 or better.

Do not use Netscape!

Other Requirements: Your username and password on the Kent State University email system. Don’t know your username? Enter your name in the KSU Phone Directory to find out.

Your username is the same username for your Kent State University E-mail account.

Your password is the same password for your Kent State University E-mail account.

Call *24357, the library help desk, for further assistance.

NOTICE: If you are a Macintosh user you will need to use a FETCH to upload your files.

Enter the following address in your browser:

ftp://username:password@mail.kent.edu/public_html

Make sure that you use your username and password. Note that your password WILL be visible in the browser address line. Be careful not to let others see it. Alternatively, you can omit the password:

ftp://username@mail.kent.edu/public_html

Or, you can simply use ftp://mail.kent.edu

Here, you may be prompted to enter your password - it will not be displayed.

In a moment, an empty window will be opened on your desktop.

The screen shot to the right shows a public_html folder that already has files in it. This is because I have already placed files in my public_html folder.

If this is the first time you have posted any files to your Web space, this area will be empty.

Drag the "index.html" file and the "index_files" folder (or any files you wish to post to the web) from your hard drive or disk to the public_html folder. I am dragging the files from My Documents.

The files will be transferred in a few seconds.

If you do not drag the files into the public_html folder they will never be visible to other people on the Web.

Your files have been transferred to your personal web space and you can now view them!  In the address bar of your browser, type the following URL:

http://www.personal.kent.edu/~username/_______

After your username, add the name of the file that you just uploaded at the end!

Example

http://www.personal.kent.edu/~username/filename.htm
